围绕本场比赛，国足8月23日开始集结备战，日本队提前三天集中合练。然而两队更鲜明的反差在于，日本队首发都来自欧洲联赛，而国足阵容无人来自欧洲，双方在比赛策略、合理性、反应等多方面存在显著差距。

伊万首发继续排出武磊和张玉宁的组合，但面对强大的日本队，国足在进攻端毫无机会，两人甚至很少能够拿到脚下球。60分钟后，伊万用阿兰、费南多、拜合拉木换下武磊、张玉宁、徐皓阳，希望通过冲击力寻找机会。然而面对同样换人调整的日本队，中国队不仅没创造什么机会，反而更显散漫，比赛后半段又连丢三球。
